Frequently, the Earth has been made to shoulder serious disasters by several factors; human activities inclusive. Although, these disasters are sometimes short-lived, their impact can be felt for years. In dire cases, human lives are lost and properties are destroyed beyond repair and compensation. Sometimes these catastrophes change the environment so much that the damage to the ecosystem is irreversible.
What exactly are environmental disasters?
According to Wikipedia, environmental disasters (also known as ecological disasters) are catastrophic events that occur because of human activities. This readily distinguishes disasters from intentional acts of war, e.g. nuclear bombings.
Classic examples of this include oil spills, nuclear accidents, and chemical spills. The ecosystem, in the face of these disasters, is changed. The first evidence of these changes is the climate conditions. The constant changes in climatic conditions escalates the frequency and intensity of climate-related hazards. Our vulnerability to these hazards is further increased by the ongoing environmental degradation, high population densities, and lack of government intervention/policies. Thus, a vicious cycle is created.
