Clean Cooking Solutions

We have been on the banter of clean cooking for a while, right? We explained what clean cooking is, the dangers of unsustainable cooking fuels, and its impact on our health and the climate. If you need a quick recap, you can start from here.

Now that you are well acquainted with the problem, let's move forward to look at clean cooking solutions.

So, what are clean cooking solutions?

The most important point about clean cooking solutions is that they employ the use of clean fuel sources, such as Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), electricity, and ethanol. Before you think these terms are strange or far from you, LPG is the exact content they fill in our cooking gas cylinder.

Admittedly, the rising cost may discourage you from employing the use of cleaner fuels in your domestic cooking. But, there are other ways you can try. That is if you really want to cook in a carbon-free way.

Other clean fuel options like the use of Electric cookstoves exist.  This is affordable and a go-to -deal for your health and the climate's safety. The only problem is whether you and the power supply officials are on good terms (lol) and whether electricity in your community is reliable. The electric cooking stove uses electricity which is cleaner compared to the traditional biomass.

Have you heard about the growing Efficient cookstoves? These are cooking stoves that have been improved upon to reduce the number of emissions and consume fewer fuels. An example is the improved charcoal stove. The improved charcoal stove not only gives less smoke but also reduces the consumption of charcoal by 35%, making it fairly safer for use.

However, we would all agree that carbon emission is influencing climate change way too much for us to merely be reducing the use of fuel wood and charcoal. It should be stopped entirely. But, we recognise this as an option (not the best) that helps save energy, especially for people in low-income areas.

Regarding clean cooking solutions, another question you may ask is "How do I identify these clean fuels as a layperson?

It's quite simple.

Clean fuels do not have emissions that give you a cough, make it hard to breathe, or make you teary-eyed or red-eyed. And, generally, these clean fuels obey the WHO 2014 indoor air guidelines.

Our main message this month is that Cooking does not have to be done at the risk of our health and the planet.

We all need to rethink our options. Weigh the benefits of clean cooking against the affordability constraints and that should be enough reason for you to choose clean cooking solutions again and again even if e no easy.
