World Water Day: Accelerating Change

"World Water Day? Why are we celebrating water? Isn't it the most common thing ever?"

Apparently, water is the most abundant natural resource on earth but is shockingly not the most accessible. This is what gave rise to commemorating and raising informative awareness every year on World Water Day.

World Water Day was founded to create more awareness of water-related challenges all over the world. This year's theme, "Accelerating Change" highlights the urgency of taking action towards water-sustainability and addressing water-related issues around the world, including access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, and water conservation.

Here are just some of the ways that we can individually help make sure that clean water is available and accessible to everyone in the world as readily as possible.

1. Be the change: The big change begins from little actions such as taking shorter showers and not leaving the water running while you brush your teeth.

Have you also heard about reusing water? This has to do with creating another use for wastewater. For example in Japan, there is a very innovative water-conservation system where water used to wash hands can be drained into a toilet tank and used to flush the water closet. This technique is said to save millions of gallons of water every year.

Become an example that others can follow and contribute to water conservation in your own 'not so little' way.

2. Be informed: You can accelerate this change by educating yourself and others around you on the importance of water conservation.

Did you know that just 1% of drinkable water is accessible and available to sustain living organisms? If the world has access to only 1% of freshwater, and the human population is 8 billion, then each person has access to 0.000000000125% of freshwater.

Plogging Nigeria made a series of enlightening blog posts about water conservation in March to commemorate World Water Day. You can check them out to educate yourself and share with others too.

3. Lend a hand: You can also take part in programs that seek to provide water infrastructure aid to communities that do not have access to clean water. Support organizations that are raising awareness on improved access to clean drinking water through their online and offline campaigns. By partnering with organizations, you can reach a wider audience.

Every community should have access to clean and usable water. But this natural resource is not going around, mostly because of overuse and waste culture among communities that have access to it. This has to change.

We hope that you have been inspired to accelerate change and help make water available to every single person on Earth. Happy World Water Day Peeps!
