Accomplishing the SDGs; Your Role, My Role

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals developed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to achieve a better and more sustainable future for everyone. The goals cover a wide range of issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, climate change, peace and justice and a lot more.

These SDGs are not for the United Nations alone to solve, everyone has a role to play in achieving them; governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and individuals.

Here are some ways by which we can all contribute to achieving the SDGs:

Individuals:

  • Consume less and more sustainably: By making healthier choices about the products we buy, the food we eat, and the way we travel, we can make a positive impact on the environment, one person at a time.

  • Reduce our waste footprint: We can reduce the amount of waste that we generate, reuse items and recycle too. These are strategies that truly help the planet, hence the reason we say it over and over again.

  • Support sustainable businesses: We can also choose to buy products from companies that are committed to sustainability. This way, other companies will be encouraged to follow suit.

  • Get involved in our communities: We can volunteer our time and skills to help others and help to make our communities more sustainable. Volunteering with organizations committed to achieving the SDGs is also a plus.

  • Educate ourselves and others about the SDGs: Learning more about the SDGs and sharing what we learn with others around us, can help to raise awareness and promote action.

Businesses and Corporate organizations :

  • Adopt sustainable practices: If our businesses adopt sustainable practices in their operations, such as using renewable energy, reducing waste, and sourcing sustainable materials, this will help in fast-tracking the SDGs.

  • Sustainable Innovation: Businesses can create new products and services that help to address sustainability challenges.

  • Partner with others: Partnering with governments, NGOs, and other businesses to achieve common sustainability goals is a big step in the right direction.

  • Advocate for sustainable policies: It is also important that businesses try to advocate for policies that support sustainable development.

  • Invest in their communities: Businesses can contribute to decent work and economic growth by investing in their communities and creating jobs, providing training, and supporting local initiatives.

Governments:

  • Develop and implement policies that support sustainable development: This is one of the foremost ways that governments can help to promote sustainable growth. These policies could include investing in renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting natural resources.

  • Provide funding for sustainable development initiatives: They can also provide funding for research, development, and the implementation of sustainable development projects.

  • Create an enabling environment for sustainable development: Governments can do this by removing barriers to innovation, promoting investment in sustainable businesses, and supporting partnerships between stakeholders.

  • Raise awareness about the SDGs: Governments should raise awareness about the SDGs through public education campaigns, partnerships and other outreach activities as well.

  • Monitor progress on the SDGs: When governments monitor their country's progress on the SDGs and track the impact of their policies and programs, they can better know what to improve upon.

Civil society organizations and NGOs:

  • Advocate for sustainable development policies: Civil society organizations can contribute to the implementation of sustainable goals by advocating for policies that support sustainable development at the local, national, and international levels.

  • Monitor government and business actions: They can as well monitor the actions of governments and businesses to ensure that they are aligned with the SDGs.

  • Empower communities: They can empower communities to take action on sustainable development issues.

  • Provide education and training. They can also provide education and training on sustainable development issues to individuals, and communities, and they could even partner with other organizations.

Achieving the SDGs will require a concerted effort from all sectors of society. By working together, we can create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
