Earth Day 2024: Planet vs Plastics

In the spirit of celebrating Earth Day, the theme adopted by the United Nations is Plastic vs. Planet.

Come to think of it, there's indeed a great battle between plastics and the planet with an imminent eclipse of the planet, just like the solar eclipse that happened a couple of days ago. Plastic is already overwhelming the planet. I can hear the voices; everywhere I turn, I hear plastic, plastic!

The planet has been before plastics, but now plastics are known to dominate the environment. Plastics, as durable and ubiquitous as they can be, pose a threat to the environment—land, ocean, and even our health as humans. Because of the components of the substance, animals are not left out of the danger.

When was the last time you took a bottle of soda? You hardly come by bottles; rather, you have PET at your beck and call.

Plastics have become a part of our daily routine, from groceries to entertainment to wrapping bags and electronic gadgets. They seem to be easy solutions but they don't care about our planet, aquatic life and environment the least bit.

In no time at all, we will be choked with plastic. But there are ways out of losing the battle against plastics.

If you ask me, I will say that we need to:

1. stop the use of plastics drastically now for the sake of now and future generations.

2. educate others on the damage caused by the accumulation of this toxic waste.

3. embrace sustainable alternatives rather than plastics.

4. reuse and recycle plastic wastes generated.

You can't eat your cake and have it; you either pick plastic or the planet. It's in our hands to make the earth plastic-free.

Let's do something significant today, let's take a pledge, which goes thus:

I, *insert your name*, from this moment on, choose the planet over plastics.

Now that you've pledged, let your actions speak volumes.
