WORLD HEALTH DAY: My Health, My Right

The World Health Organization (WHO) was established on April 7, 1948, and this day is celebrated every year as World Health Day.

Every year, a prevalent health problem is selected as the theme of World Health Day and discussed. This is to create awareness about it and discover ways to eradicate it.

Previous themes have focused on health issues such as malaria, polio, antimicrobial resistance, depression and many others.

This year's theme tagged "My Health, My Right", is aimed at raising awareness on the right for everyone to have access to quality water, clean air, food and everything that promotes good health and wellbeing, thereby seeing to it that good healthcare is available and accessible to everyone around the world, regardless of age, economic or social status.

Thanks to our many unhealthy environmental practices and resulting effects such as global warming, it is now easier to be exposed to illnesses. Due to low-quality healthcare in some developing countries, we have seen several avoidable deaths among children and other vulnerable populations.

Year after year, scientists keep discovering new infectious viruses and are yet to find a cure to diseases like cancer yet.

While it is true that good health is our right, it is not just something that the government or the United Nations alone can claim for us. You and I have a role to play.

That is why on this year's World Health Day, we remind you to begin making healthy choices that you can control. Choices like:

- Eating fresh foods and balanced diets

- Exercising

- Wearing sunblock and protective clothing

- Encouraging the people around you to live healthily.

- Participating in and supporting governmental/non-governmental health interventions in your local community.

You cannot take care of your natural environment or fight for sustainability when your body is tired and constantly fighting diseases.

Finally, always remember that a healthy outside starts from the inside. So, stay healthy.
