The public sector is a vital component of a nation's economy, encompassing various government entities, institutions, and agencies that provide essential services and manage resources for the benefit of citizens, businesses, and other organizations (ECOWAS 2020). The public sector represents a diverse range of sectors, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, defense, and social welfare, which are critical to the well-being and prosperity of the society (World Bank, 2020). According to the World Health Organization (2020), the public sector accounts for approximately 64.2% of total government expenditure on healthcare, while education and infrastructure development account for 21.1% and 10.5% respectively, in an average nation (UNESCO, 2020; World Bank, 2020).
NEGATIVE WAYS THE PUBLIC SECTOR AND GOVERNANCE HAS CONTRIBUTED TO CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS
Climate and environmental crisis is a whistle blowing topic in the western part of Africa and the present world as a whole. While efforts are being made to reduce this menace, there are shortcomings in the Public Sector and its governance and some of them include:
- Inefficient regulatory structures.
- Failure to implement effective waste management and pollution control measures.
- Lack of investment in renewable energy.
POSITIVE WAYS THE PUBLIC SECTOR AND GOVERNANCE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO ISSUES OF CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS
The Public Sector and Governance can reduce climate and environmental impact through practical measures and industry-wide strategies.
They can implement energy-efficient practices in day-to-day operations. This includes using renewable energy sources like solar and wind power for government buildings. Switching to energy-saving appliances and lighting and promoting sustainable transportation can also make a significant difference.

HOW THEY CAN SERVE AS A MODEL TO OTHER SECTORS
The public sector and governance can play a pivotal role in setting standards for sustainability that other sectors can follow. They can serve as a model by incorporating comprehensive sustainability practices through policy, leadership, and operational frameworks.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Public sectors and Governance should promote eco-friendly practices (recycling, waste reduction, sustainable consumption etc). They should enact and enforce robust environmental policies and regulations.
CONCLUSION
Effective governance and public sector involvement are critical in addressing the climate and environmental crisis. By implementing comprehensive policies, investing in sustainable technologies, cooperating internationally, planning sustainable urban development, raising public awareness, and preparing for climate impacts, governments, can lead the way in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
